Four rocky hills, including Botswana’s highest point, jut strikingly out of the surrounding Kalahari Desert plains to form Tsodilo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the remote northwest of the country; a definite a ‘must see’ for those seeking more than wildlife from their time in Botswana.
Over 4500 rock paintings, some dating back an estimated 26,000 years, adorn the marshmallow coloured quartzite rocks, these rock paintings consist of mostly of isolated figures and domestic and wild animals. You can find scenes and geometric patterns too. The hills are sacred to the San Bushman who utilised the caves and spring here until the late 20th century, and there is evidence of human activity here dating back some 100,000 years. Tsodilo Hills is a respected place of worship and ancestors, and holds significant spiritual meaning to many.
Arriving by helicopter allows guests to appreciate the significance of these hills and area from the air, to and from The Heliport. Once you have reached your destination, you will be greeted by a local Rock Art Expert who will explain the fascinating artwork, presenting a side to Botswana few tourists get to experience.
